ad-Dhahabi mentioned himself in Dhayl dīwān al-ḍuʿafā
345 – محمد بن أحمد بن عثمان الغافقي: سيء الحفظ ليس بالمتقن ولا بالمتقي. سامحه الله تعالى.
Muhammad bin Ahmad bin Uthman al Ghafiqi, he has weak memory, he is not memoriser neither he is pious. May Allah forgive him.

He mentioned his biography in المعجم المختص بالمحدثين and said:
الذهبي، المصنف ، محمد بن أحمد بن عثمان بن قايماز ابن الشيخ عبد الله التركماني الفارقي ثم الدمشقي الشافعي المقرئ المحدث، مُخَرِّج هذا المعجم.
وُلِد سنة ثلاث وسبعين وستمائة … وجمعَ تواليفَ، يُقالُ: مفيدة، والجماعة يتفضلون ويثنون عليه، وهو أخبر بنفسه، وبنقصه في العلم والعمل، والله المستعان ولا قوة إلا به، وإذا سلِم لي إيماني فيا فوزي
