The Woman who died as a Virgin is Martyr

Some scholars have mentioned that among the categories of martyrs is the woman who dies a virgin, based on the statement of the Prophet peace be upon him:

“And the woman who dies with ‘جُمْع’ is a martyr.” This was narrated by Mālik, Aḥmad, Abū Dāwūd, and others.

Ibn Athir said:

In the hadith about martyrs, it is mentioned:

“A woman who dies in the state of ‘jumʿ'” meaning, she dies while pregnant, with the child still in her womb.

And it is also said: it refers to a woman who dies a virgin… The meaning is: she died with something gathered inside her that was not yet separated from her, such as pregnancy or virginity.

a narration states:

“Any woman who dies in the state of jumʿ, having never menstruated, will enter Paradise.” This refers to a virgin woman.

And the saying of the woman of al-‘Ajjāj:

“I am from him in the state of jumʿ,” — means “I am a virgin who has not been deflowered.” [Al-Nihāyah fī Gharīb al-Ḥadīth wa al-Athar 1/295]

Al-Suyuti said the exact same thing in ‘Uqūd al-Zabarjad ‘alá Musnad al-Imām Aḥmad, Volume 1, page 309. Similarly, Shaykh Shams al-Ḥaqq Aẓīmābādī stated the same in ‘Awn al-Ma‘būd.

Al-Nawawī mentioned both opinions but preferred the first one, although it is possible that both meanings are correct.

The Muftis of Islam web states:

As for the woman who remains unmarried and patiently accepts the decree of Allah, she earns the reward of those who are patient, provided she maintains chastity, avoids unlawful desires, preserves her modesty, and remains upright in her religion despite the many temptations and avenues of corruption. We ask Allah to grant the daughters of the Muslims righteous spouses and to bless them with chastity and modesty. He is capable of all things. (end quote)
