Sahaba would play and laugh with each other

  • Sahaba would play around and laugh with each other. 6 must read narrations.

1. Abdullah bin Mubarak narrated

From Al Awzai from Bilal bin Sa’d that I saw them doing archery and laughing at each other, and when night fell they would become monks (i.e. engaged in the worship of Allah).

Kitab al Zuhud li Ibn Al Mubarak no. 144, narrators are trustworthy.

2. Abdul Razzaq narrated:

It is reported that ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUmar – Allāh be pleased with him – was asked:

Did the Companions of Allāh’s Messenger – Allāh’s peace and blessings be upon him – used to laugh? He replied, “Yes, and the īmān (faith) in their hearts was greater than the mountains.”

ʿAbd Al-Razzāq Al-Ṣan’ānī, Al-Muṣannaf 11:327 narrators are trustworthy but Qatada didn’t see Ibn Umar. The meaning of narration is saheeh.

3. Imam al Bukhari Narrated:

Bakr ibn Abdullah reported that the Sahaba of Rasool صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم, used to throw (peel of) melons at one another. He said, “If it came to the Haqaaiq (the matters which required protection), they would (act like great) men.”

Adab al Mufrad, Book 14, Hadith 266 authenticated by Shaykh Al Albani.

4. Imam Muslim narrated from Jabir b. Samura that he said:

They (I.e Companions) entered into conversation with one another and they talked of the things (that they did during the Days of Ignorance), and they laughed (on their unreasonable and ridiculous acts). Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) smiled only.

5. Umar bin al Khattab vs Ibn Abbas.

Imam Shafiee narrated that Ibn Abbas said:

Umar bin al Khattab said to me, let’s see who from us hold the breath longest in the water and we were in Ihram.

[It is mentioned in الإختيارات الفقهية للإمام الألباني page 238 the chain is authentic]

6. Umar bin al Khattab vs people of the city Asfaan and Ibn Zubair.

Ibn Zubayr said that ‘Umar may Allaah be pleased with him raced with people at Al-Mukhammas, in ‘Asfaan, and ‘Umar may Allaah be pleased with him won the race.

Then, the companions raced for the second time, and Ibn Az-Zubayr may Allaah be pleased with him defeated ‘Umar may Allaah be pleased with him.
