Following are all the Authentic narrations according to the Muhaqqiq (Dr Atiya az-Zahrani) of the book “as-Sunnah” by al Khallal chapter on Muawiyah bin Abi Sufiyan ra.
Imam Khallal said:
ذِكْرُ أَبِي عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ وَخِلَافَتِهِ، رِضْوَانُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ
The dhikr of Abi Abdul Rahman Muawiyah bin Abi Sufiyan and his caliphate May Allah be pleased with him.
652 – أَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو النَّضْرِ الْعِجْلِيُّ، أَنَّهُ سَأَلَ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ حَدِيثِ جَابِرِ بْنِ سَمُرَةَ: ” يَكُونُ بَعْدِي اثْنَا عَشَرَ أَمِيرًا، أَوْ قَالَ: خَلِيفَةً “، فَقَالَ: «قَدْ جَاءَ»
Imam Ahmad was asked about the hadeeth of Jabir bin Samura: that (Prophet (ﷺ)) said, “There will be twelve Muslim rulers or Caliph after me” Ahmad said: “They have already come” (i.e. Imam Ahmad included Muawiyah ra among them.)
653 – وَأَخْبَرَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ، أَنَّ مُهَنَّا حَدَّثَهُمْ قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ أَحْمَدَ عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ، فَقَالَ: «لَهُ صُحْبَةٌ» . قُلْتُ: مِنْ أَيْنَ هُوَ؟ قَالَ: «مَكِّيُّ قَطَنَ الشَّامَ»
Imam Ahmad was asked regarding Muawiyah, he said: He was a companion, he was asked, where is he from? Ahmad replied: Makki who lived in ash-Sham.
654 – وَأَخْبَرَنِي عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْحَمِيدِ الْمَيْمُونِيُّ، قَالَ: قُلْتُ لِأَحْمَدَ بْنِ حَنْبَلٍ: أَلَيْسَ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «كُلُّ صِهْرٍ وَنَسَبٍ يَنْقَطِعُ إِلَّا صْهِرِي وَنَسَبِي» ؟ قَالَ: ” بَلَى، قُلْتُ: وَهَذِهِ لِمُعَاوِيَةَ؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ، لَهُ صِهْرٌ وَنَسَبٌ. قَالَ: وَسَمِعْتُ ابْنَ حَنْبَلٍ يَقُولُ: «مَا لَهُمْ وَلِمُعَاوِيَةَ، نَسْأَلُ اللَّهَ الْعَافِيَةَ»
Abdul Hameed al Maymuni said, I asked Ahmad bin Hanbal, isn’t it that Prophet peace be upon him said: “All relative and lineage relations will be cut off except my relatives and my family” He said: Yes, I said: Is this also for Muawiya? he replied yes he had relation and lineage . He said I heard Ahamd bin Hanbal saying: Whatever is for them, is for Muawiya, and we ask Allah Aafiyah for him (Muawiya).
657 – أَخْبَرَنِي أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مَطَرٍ، وَزَكَرِيَّا بْنُ يَحْيَى، أَنَّ أَبَا طَالِبٍ حَدَّثَهُمْ أَنَّهُ سَأَلَ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ: أَقُولُ: مُعَاوِيَةُ خَالُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ؟ وَابْنُ عُمَرَ خَالُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ، مُعَاوِيَةُ أَخُو أُمِّ حَبِيبَةَ بِنْتِ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ، زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَرَحِمَهُمَا، وَابْنُ عُمَرَ أَخُو حَفْصَةَ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَرَحِمَهُمَا، قُلْتُ: أَقُولُ: مُعَاوِيَةُ خَالُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ ”
It was narrated from Abu Taalib that he asked Abu ‘Abd-Allaah – Ahmad ibn Hanbal – about saying “Mu’aawiyah the maternal uncle of the believers” or “Ibn ‘Umar the maternal uncle of the believers”. He said: Yes, Mu’aawiyah was the brother of Umm Habeebah bint Abi Sufyaan, the wife of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him and may Allaah have mercy on her), and Ibn ‘Umar was the brother of Hafsah the wife of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him and may Allaah have mercy on her). I said: Can I say Mu’aawiyah the maternal uncle of the believers? He said: Yes.
658 – أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ الْمَرُّوذِيُّ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ هَارُونَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، يَقُولُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ: جَاءَنِي كِتَابٌ مِنَ الرَّقَّةِ أَنَّ قَوْمًا قَالُوا: لَا نَقُولُ: مُعَاوِيَةُ خَالُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ، فَغَضِبَ وَقَالَ: «مَا اعْتِرَاضُهُمْ فِي هَذَا الْمَوْضِعِ، يُجْفَوْنَ حَتَّى يَتُوبُوا»
It was narrated from Haroon ibn ‘Abd-Allaah that he said to Abu ‘Abd-Allaah –Ahmad ibn Hanbal – : A letter came to me from al-Raqqah saying that some people say: We do not say that Mu’aawiyah was the maternal uncle of the believers. He got angry and said: Why are they objecting to this matter? They should be shunned until they repent.
659 – أَخْبَرَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي هَارُونَ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، أَنَّ أَبَا الْحَارِثِ حَدَّثَهُمْ قَالَ: وَجَّهْنَا رُقْعَةً إِلَى أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ: مَا تَقُولُ رَحِمَكَ اللَّهُ فِيمَنْ قَالَ: لَا أَقُولُ إِنَّ مُعَاوِيَةَ كَاتَبُ الْوَحْيِ، وَلَا أَقُولُ إِنَّهُ خَالُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ، فَإِنَّهُ أَخَذَهَا بِالسَّيْفِ غَصْبًا؟ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ: هَذَا قَوْلُ سَوْءٍ رَدِيءٌ، يُجَانَبُونَ هَؤُلَاءِ الْقَوْمِ، وَلَا يُجَالَسُونَ، وَنُبَيِّنُ أَمْرَهُمْ لِلنَّاسِ
It was narrated from Muhammad ibn Abi Haroon and Muhammad ibn Abi Ja’far that Abu’l-Haarith told them: We sent a note to Abu ‘Abd-Allaah – Ahmad ibn Hanbal – saying: What do you say, may Allaah have mercy on you, about that who say: I will not say that Mu’aawiyah was the scribe of the revelation and I will not say that he was the maternal uncle of the believers, because he took the caliphate by the sword and by force? Abu ‘Abd-Allaah said: These are bad words and these people should be avoided and shunned, and we should warn the people about them.
660 – وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ الْمَرُّوذِيُّ، قَالَ: قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ: أَيُّهُمَا أَفْضَلُ: مُعَاوِيَةُ أَوْ عُمَرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ؟ فَقَالَ: «مُعَاوِيَةُ أَفْضَلُ، لَسْنَا نَقِيسُ بِأَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَحَدًا» . قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «خَيْرُ النَّاسِ قَرْنِيَ الَّذِينَ بُعِثْتُ فِيهِمْ»
It was narrated that Abu Bakr al-Marwadhi said: I said to Abu ‘Abd-Allaah – Ahmad ibn Hanbal – Who is better, Mu’aawiyah or ‘Umar ibn ‘Abd al-‘Azeez? He said: Mu’aawiyah is better; we do not compare the companions of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) to anyone. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The best of mankind are my generation among whom I was sent.”
661 – أَخْبَرَنِي عِصْمَةُ بْنُ عَاصِمٍ، قَالَ: ثَنَا حَنْبَلٌ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ وَسُئِلَ: مَنْ أَفْضَلُ: مُعَاوِيَةُ أَوْ عُمَرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ؟ قَالَ: «مَنْ رَأَى رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ» ، وَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «خَيْرُ النَّاسِ قَرْنِي»
Imam Ahmad was asked, who is better? Muawiyah or Umar bin Abdul Aziz, Imam Ahmad replied: Who saw Prophet peace be upon him (i.e. Muawiyah ra), Prophet peace be upon him said: The best of people are the people of my generation.
662 – أَخْبَرَنِي يُوسُفُ بْنُ مُوسَى، وَأَحْمَدُ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ حَسَّانَ، أَنَّ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، قِيلَ لَهُ: هَلْ يُقَاسُ بِأَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَحَدٌ؟ قَالَ: «مَعَاذَ اللَّهِ» ، قِيلَ: فَمُعَاوِيَةُ أَفْضَلُ مِنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ؟ قَالَ: «إِي لَعَمْرِي» ، قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: خَيْرُ النَّاسِ قَرْنِي
Same translation as 661, but it says, Can we do qiyas on companions of Prophet peace be upon him for someone? He replied: May Allah forbid.
664 – أَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو بَكْرٍ الْمَرْوذِيُّ، قَالَ: كَتَبَ إِلَيْنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ خَشْرَمٍ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ بِشْرَ بْنَ الْحَارِثِ، يَقُولُ: سُئِلَ الْمُعَافَى وَأَنَا أَسْمَعُ، أَوْ سَأَلْتُهُ: مُعَاوِيَةُ أَفْضَلُ أَوْ عُمَرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ؟، فَقَالَ: «كَانَ مُعَاوِيَةُ أَفْضَلُ مِنْ سِتِّمِائَةٍ مِثْلِ عُمَرَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ»
Muafaa (ibn Imran) said: Muawiyah is better than Six Hundred Umar bin Abdul Aziz.
670 – أَخْبَرَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ، قَالَ: ثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْعَلَاءِ، عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ عَيَّاشٍ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ،: «مَا رَأَيْتُ بَعْدَهُ مِثْلَهُ، يَعْنِي مُعَاوِيَةَ»
Abu Ishaq (as-Sabiyee) said: I have not seen anyone like Muawiyah after him.
675 – أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي قَالَ: ثَنَا وَكِيعٌ، عَنْ أَبِي الْمُعْتَمِرِ يَعْنِي الْحَسَوِيَّ، قَالَ: وَاسْمُهُ يَزِيدُ بْنُ طَهْمَانَ، عَنِ ابْنِ سِيرِينَ، قَالَ: «كَانَ مُعَاوِيَةُ لَا يُتَّهَمُ فِي الْحَدِيثِ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ»
Ibn Sireen said:: Muawiya ra did not lie upon Prophet peace be upon him in narrating ahadith.
676 – أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي قَالَ: ثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، قَالَ: «لَمَّا قَدِمَ مُعَاوِيَةُ عَرَضَ النَّاسَ عَلَى عَطِيَّةِ آبَائِهِمْ حَتَّى انْتَهَى إِلَيَّ، فَأَعْطَانِي ثَلَاثَمِائَةِ دِرْهَمٍ»
Abu Ishaq said: I went to Muawiyah and he was giving gifts to people for their parents, and when I met him he gave me 300 dirham.
677 – أَخْبَرَنِي عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ الْمَيْمُونِيُّ، قَالَ: ثَنَا أَبُو سَلَمَةَ، قَالَ: ثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ، عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ، عَنْ هَمَّامِ بْنِ مُنَبِّهٍ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ، يَقُولُ: «مَا رَأَيْتُ رَجُلًا كَانَ أَخْلَقَ لِلْمُلْكِ مِنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ، إِنْ كَانَ النَّاسُ لَيَرِدُونَ مِنْهُ عَلَى وَادِي الرَّحْبِ وَلَمْ يَكُنْ كَالضَّيِّقِ الْحَصِيصِ، الضَّجِرِ الْمُتَغَضِّبِ» . سَأَلْتُ أَحْمَدَ بْنَ يَحْيَى ثَعْلَبَ عَنْ حَدِيثِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ: «لَمْ يَكُنْ مُعَاوِيَةُ كَالضَّيِّقِ الْحَصِيصِ» ، فَقَالَ: يَضْبِطُ الْأُمُورَ، قُلْتُ لِثَعْلَبٍ: يَكُونُ أَنَّهُ يَعْنِي لَمْ يَكُنْ ضَيِّقَ الْخُلُقِ؟ قَالَ: يَكُونُ فِي الْخُلُقِ وَغَيْرِهِ إِلَّا أَنَّهُ فِي الْمَالِ أَكْثَرُ، وَرَأَيْتُ مَا يَغْلِبَ عَلَى ثَعْلَبٍ فِي قَوْلِهِ: إِنَّهُ يَضْبِطُ الْأُمُورَ
Ibn Abbas ra said: “I Have not seen anyone who ruled to better than Muawiya and If the people ask him in the valley of Rahab, he would not be hard and harsh on them.
Ahmad bin Yahya Tha`alab was asked regarding this narration, He replied: It means Muawiyah would settle the things for people.
678 – أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ أَبِي يَقُولُ فِي حَدِيثِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ: «مَا رَأَيْتُ أَحَدًا بَعْدَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ أَسْوَدَ مِنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ» . قَالَ: ” تَفْسِيرُهُ: أَسْخَى مِنْهُ ”
Ibn Umar ra said:
I have not seen Aswad after Prophet peace be upon him other than Muawiyah. Imam Ahmad was asked the meaning of Aswad, He replied: It means generous
683 – أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ شَاكِرٍ، قَالَ: ثَنَا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ، قَالَ: ثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ، عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، قَالَ: «عَمِلَ مُعَاوِيَةُ بِسِيرَةِ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ سِنِينَ لَا يَخْرِمُ مِنْهَا شَيْئًا»
az-Zuhri (the Tabiyee) said: The practice of Muawiyah ra was on the way of Umar bin al Khattab, and he did not reduced anything from it.
691 – أَخْبَرَنِي أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مَطَرٍ، قَالَ: ثَنَا أَبُو طَالِبٍ، قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ
أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ: يُكْتَبُ عَنِ الرَّجُلِ، إِذَا قَالَ: مُعَاوِيَةُ مَاتَ عَلَى غَيْرِ الْإِسْلَامِ أَوْ كَافِرٌ؟ قَالَ: ” لَا، ثُمَّ قَالَ: لَا يُكَفَّرُ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ”
Imam Ahmad was asked, can we write from the one who says Muawiyah died without Islam or died as a Kafir? He said: NO, then he said: do not say Kafir to the person among the companions of Prophet peace be upon him.
692 – أَخْبَرَنِي يُوسُفُ بْنُ مُوسَى، أَنَّ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ سُئِلَ عَنْ رَجُلٍ شَتَمَ مُعَاوِيَةَ، يُصَيِّرُهُ إِلَى السُّلْطَانِ؟ قَالَ: «أَخْلَقُ أَنْ يُتَعَدَّى عَلَيْهِ»
Yusaf bin Musa said: Abu Abdullah (Ahmad) was asked about a person who criticise Muawiya, whether he should be taken to the Sultan or not? He replied: He should be punished.
693 – أَخْبَرَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مُوسَى، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ أَبَا بَكْرِ بْنَ سِنْدِيٍّ قَرَابَةَ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الْحَرْبِيِّ قَالَ: كُنْتُ، أَوْ حَضَرْتُ، أَوْ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ وَسَأَلَهُ رَجُلٌ: يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، لِي خَالٌ ذَكَرَ أَنَّهُ يَنْتَقِصُ مُعَاوِيَةَ، وَرُبَّمَا أَكَلْتُ مَعَهُ، فَقَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ مُبَادِرًا: «لَا تَأْكُلْ مَعَهُ»
Ibraheem al Harbee said: a person asked Abu Abdullah (Ahmad), My uncle criticize Muawiya and sometimes i eat with him, He replied immediately, do not eat with him.
697 – أَخْبَرَنَا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ سُفْيَانَ أَبُو يُوسُفَ الْفَارِسِيُّ، قَالَ: ثَنَا مَحْمُودُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ الْأَزْرَقُ، قَالَ: ثَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْوَاحِدِ، قَالَ: ثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ، عَنْ رَبِيعَةَ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ: أَنَّ بَعْثًا مِنْ أَهْلِ الشَّامِ كَانُوا مُرَابِطِينَ بِآمِدَ، وَكَانَ عَلَى حِمْصَ عُمَيْرُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ فَعَزَلَهُ عُثْمَانُ وَوَلَّى مُعَاوِيَةُ، فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ أَهْلُ حِمْصَ فَشَقَّ عَلَيْهِمْ، فَقَالَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ أَبِي عَمِيرَةَ الْمُزَنِيُّ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ لِمُعَاوِيَةَ: «اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْهُ هَادِيًا مَهْدِيًّا، وَاهْدِهِ وَاهْدِ بِهِ»
Prophet (sallalahu alaihi wa ala alihi wa sallam) said to Muawiyah (r.a): “O Allah, make him (Muawiya ) guided, a guider, and guide people through him”
707 – حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ، قَالَ: ثَنَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْأُوَيْسِيُّ، قَالَ: ثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنِ الْأَعْرَجِ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «قُرَيْشٌ، وَالْأَنْصَارُ، وَغِفَارٌ، وَأَسْلَمُ، وَمُزَيْنَةُ، وَجُهَيْنَةُ، وَأَشْجَعُ، مَوَالِيَّ، لَيْسَ لَهُمْ مَوْلًى دُونَ اللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ»
Narrated Abu Huraira:
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “The tribes of Quraish, Al-Ansar, Juhaina, Muzaina, Aslam, Ghifar and Ashja’ are my helpers, and they have no protector (i.e. Master) except Allah and His Apostle.”
712 – أَخْبَرَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عَرَفَةَ، قَالَ: ثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ الْبَلْخِيُّ، عَنْ لَيْثٍ، عَنْ سَعْدٍ، عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ صَالِحٍ، عَنْ يُونُسَ بْنِ سَيْفٍ، عَنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ دَعَا لِمُعَاوِيَةَ فَقَالَ: «اللَّهُمَّ عَلِّمْهُ الْكِتَابَ وَالْحِسَابَ، وَقِهِ الْعَذَابَ»
Prophet Peace be upon him said ” O Allah ! Teach Muawya Math, and protect him from the Punishment ” [The muhaqqiq said the chain is weak but it has shawahid]
713 – أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ الْمَرُّوذِيُّ، قَالَ: قِيلَ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ وَنَحْنُ بِالْعَسْكَرِ وَقَدْ جَاءَ بَعْضُ رُسُلِ الْخَلِيفَةِ وَهُوَ يَعْقُوبُ فَقَالَ: يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، مَا تَقُولُ فِيمَا كَانَ مِنْ عَلِيٍّ وَمُعَاوِيَةَ رَحِمَهُمَا اللَّهُ؟ فَقَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ: «مَا أَقُولُ فِيهَا إِلَّا الْحُسْنَى، رَحِمَهُمُ اللَّهُ أَجْمَعِينَ»
“Imam Ahmad also said, after it was said to him: What do you say about what happened between ‘Ali and Mu‘aawiyah (May Allaah be pleased with them)? He said: I do not say anything about them except what is best. May Allah have mercy on all of them.
