A newlywed woman who single-handedly killed seven Roman soldiers with a tent pole after they martyred her husband. Umm Ḥakīm bint al-Ḥārith (the niece of Khālid ibn al-Walīd.)
1. In Futūḥ al-Buldān by Aḥmad ibn Yaḥyā ibn Jābir al-Balādhurī (d. 279 AH), he recounts the events of the Battle of Marj al-Ṣuffar, saying:
“On that day, Khālid ibn Saʿīd ibn al-ʿĀṣ ibn Umayyah whose kunya was Abū Saʿīd was martyred.
He had married Umm Ḥakīm bint al-Ḥārith ibn Hishām al-Makhzūmiyyah, the widow of ʿIkrimah ibn Abī Jahl, on the very night before the battle.
When news of his martyrdom reached her, she tore out a tent pole and fought with it, and it is said that she killed seven men that day, even though she was still scented with perfume (i.e., traces of bridal fragrance remained on her).”
2. Ibn Athir said:
“Umm Ḥakīm fought on that day and killed seven men using the pole of the tent in which Khālid had consummated the marriage with her.”
Usd al-ghābah fi maʿrifat al-Saḥabah biography of Umm Ḥakīm bint al-Ḥārith.
3. Same is mentioned by Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr, he said, Khālid ibn Saʿīd went out, fought bravely, and was killed.
Then Umm Ḥakīm wrapped her clothes around herself, revealing the traces of perfume (khalūq) on her, and stepped out to fight (he also mentioned she killed 7 romans). [ in al-Istīʿāb fī maʿrifat al-ṣaḥāba]
4. Ibn Manẓūr said about her:
The people fought a fierce battle, and even women fought with swords among them was Umm Ḥakīm bint al-Ḥārith ibn Hishām, who entered the army camp.” [Mukhtasar Tareekh Damishq]
