Qais ibn Ubaad said:
قدمت المدينة التمس العلم والشرف فرأيت عليا وعمر قد وضع يده على منكبه
I went to Madina to take knowledge and honor, I Saw Ali, and Umar’s hand was on his (Ali’s) shoulders. [Yaqub bin Sufiyan in Muarifat al Tareekh 1/445, Ibn Hajr quoted from Yaqub in al Isaba 5/535, It is mentioned in Ali al Murtadha by Sayf ullah Khalid “Chain is Authentic”]

Narrated Um Hani the daughter of Abu Talib:
I went to Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) on the day of the conquest of Mecca ..
I said, “O Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him)! My brother `Ali has declared that he will kill a man to whom I have granted asylum. The man is Fulaan bin Hubaira.”
Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said:
“O Um Hani! We will grant asylum to the one whom you have granted asylum.” [Sahih al-Bukhari 3171]

at-Tabrani narrated
خَطَبَ عَلِيٌّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى عَنْهُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَاطِمَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى عَنْهَا ، فَقَالَ : ” هِي لَكَ عَلَى أَنْ تُحْسِنَ صُحْبَتَهَا ” .
When Ali ra asked the hand of Fatima ra from Prophet peace be upon him for marriage, He (peace be upon him) said: “She is yours if you live with her in a best way”

4. When ‘Ali ibn Abu Talib may Allah be pleased with him went to meet Marhab the jew in a single combat.
Marhab advanced chanting:
“Khaibar knows certainly that I am Marhab, A fully armed and well-tried valorous warrior (hero) When war comes spreading its flames.”
‘Ali chanted in reply:
“I am the one whose mother named him Haidar, (And am) like a lion of the forest with a terror-striking countenance. I give my opponents the measure of sandara in exchange for sa’ (i.e. return their attack with one that is much more fierce)” [Sahih Muslim Book 19, Hadith 4450]
5. Talk to the people according to what their minds can grasp.
Ali ra said:
حَدِّثُوا النَّاسَ، بِمَا يَعْرِفُونَ، أَتُحِبُّونَ أَنْ يُكَذَّبَ، اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ
“Talk to the people according to what they know (i.e. to what their minds can grasp); do you want that Allah and His Messenger would be belied?”
[Sahih al-Bukhari: 127]
6. Ali in the Markets doing Islaah of people.
Jarmooz said:
رَأَيْتُ عَلِيًّا وَهُوَ يَخْرُجُ مِنَ الْقَصْرِ وَعَلَيْهِ قِطْرِيَّتَانِ، إِزَارُهُ إِلَى نِصْفِ السَّاقِ، وَرِدَاؤُهُ مُشَمَّرٌ قَرِيبًا مِنْهُ، وَمَعَهُ الدِّرَّةُ، يَمْشِي فِي الْأَسْوَاقِ، وَيَأْمُرُهُمْ بِتَقْوَى اللَّهِ، وَحُسْنِ الْبَيْعِ، وَيَقُولُ: أَوْفُوا الْكَيْلَ وَالْمِيزَانَ، وَلَا تَنْقَحُوا اللَّحْمَ.
I saw Ali going out from Qasr, He had two cloth over him, his lower garment reached halfway down the legs, and the cloth over him was close to (the lower garment), with his whip he was in the markets, ordered (the businessmen) to fear Allah and to do good business, He (Ali said): Measure and weight correctly, Do not (sell) defective meat. [Fadail Sahaba by Imam Ahmad 2/557, Sh Wasi ullah Abbas said: the chain is authentic]
7. Ali ibn abi Talib informed a story of a Raahib and a woman possessed by the Satan.
Ibn Kathir said:
فقال ابن جرير حدثنا خلاد بن أسلم حدثنا النضر بن شميل أنبأنا شعبة عن أبي إسحاق سمعت عبد الله بن نهيك سمعت عليا يقول : إن راهبا تعبد ستين سنة ، وإن الشيطان أراده فأعياه فعمد إلى امرأة فأجنها ، ولها إخوة فقال لإخوتها : عليكم بهذا القس فيداويها قال : فجاءوا بها إليه فداواها وكانت عنده فبينما هو يوما عندها ، إذ أعجبته فأتاها فحملت فعمد إليها فقتلها ، فجاء إخوتها فقال الشيطان : للراهب أنا صاحبك إنك أعييتني أنا صنعت هذا بك فأطعني أنجك مما صنعت بك ، اسجد لي سجدة فسجد له فلما سجد له قال : إني بريء منك إني أخاف الله رب العالمين فذلك قوله كمثل الشيطان إذ قال للإنسان اكفر فلما كفر قال إني بريء منك إني أخاف الله رب العالمين .
Ibn Jarir said: I was told by Khallad Ibn Aslam, on the authority of An-Nadr Ibn Shamil after Shu’bah, after Abu Ishaq, after ‘Abdullah Ibn Nahik saying: I heard ‘Ali as saying: A monk worshipped Allah Alone for sixty years. Satan exerted himself to seduce him, but could not. He went to a woman and touched her with evil (maddened her).
The woman had brothers whom were visited by Satan who told them to take her to that monk to receive treatment and cure. They took her to the monk and he treated her. Afterwards, she stayed for a while at his cell (house).
One day, he was attracted to her and he committed adultery with her. She got pregnant and he killed her (to conceal his first crime). Her brothers came (after knowing the matter),
And Satan appeared again for the monk and said:
I am your friend, I did not find a solution or way to mislead you, but (finally) I set you up. So, obey me and I will save you from this. Prostrate yourself before me and you will be saved. The monk did so. Then, Satan said: {“I am free of you, I fear Allah, the Lord of the`Alamin (mankind, jinn and all that exists)! “} .(Al- Hashr ,16)
This is the interpretation of Allah’s Saying: {(Their allies deceived them) like Shaitan (Satan), when he says to man: “Disbelieve in Allah.” But when (man) disbelieves in Allah, Shaitan (Satan) says: “I am free of you, I fear Allah, the Lord of the” Alamin (mankind, jinn and all that exists)!” So the end of both will be that they will be in the Fire, abiding therein. Such is the recompense of the Zalimun (i.e. polytheists, wrong-doers, disbelievers in Allah and in His Oneness)}. (Al-Hashr, 16, 17)
[Stories of the Quran by Ibn Kathir page 226, Tafsir Tabri under Surah al Hashr verse 16, It is mentioned in Ali al Murtadha by Sayf ullah Khalid page 213 that the chain is Hasan lidhatih ]8. What if there is small amount of water and a travelling person is in need of ghusl Janaba.
Zadaan Narrated from Ali May Allah be pleased with him:
قَالَ فِي الرَّجُلِ يَكُونُ فِي السَّفَرِ فَتُصِيبُهُ الْجَنَابَةُ وَمَعَهُ الْمَاءُ الْقَلِيلُ يَخَافُ أَنْ يَعْطَشَ قَالَ: «يَتَيَمَّمُ وَلَا يَغْتَسِلُ»
Who said regarding a travelling person in need of (ghusl of) Janaba and he has small amount of water, and he fear (that if he use the water then it would be hard for him to find the water). He should do tayammum rather than ghusl (Janaba). [ad-Daraqutni 1/374 no. 774, It is mentioned in Ali al Mustada by Sayf ullah Khalid “The chain is authentic”]
9. Every divorced woman has compensation.
Ali ibn Abu Talib said:
لِكُلِّ مُطَلَّقَةٍ مُتْعَةٌ
“Every divorced woman has compensation.” [Sharah Mushkil al Athaar 7/57, It is mentioned in Ali al Murtada by Sayf ullah Khalid page 218 that the chain is Hasan Lidhatih]
10. The things better than supererogatory prayers and fasts.’
Ali ibn Abu Talib said:
“I advise you, O Hasan and all my children and family, to fear Allah your Lord, and never die except in a state of slam, and hold fast, all of you together, to the rope of Allah (this Qur’an), and be not divided among yourselves. I heard Abul-Qasim say:
‘Reconciling between people is better than supererogatory prayers
and fasts.’
[al Haythami said: “Narrated by at-Tabrani, Its Mursal and a Hasan Chain” Majma al Zawaid: 9/145, al Albani said: The chain is weak Muad`al in al Irwa 6/76]
Narrated Abu Darda’:
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Shall I not inform you of something more excellent in degree than fasting, prayer and alms giving (sadaqah)? The people replied: Yes, Prophet of Allah! He said: It is putting things right between people, spoiling them is the shaver (destructive).

Sunan Abi Dawud 4919
Yahya related to me from Malik that Yahya ibn Said said that he heard Said ibn al-Musayyab say, “Shall I tell you what is better than much prayer and sadaqa?” They said, “Yes.” He said, “Mending discord. And beware of hatred – it strips you (of your deen).” [Muwatta Imam Malik Book 47, Hadith 1642]
11. To those men who do not feel shame when their womenfolk mix with the disbelievers in the marketplaces.
12. And To those women who do not feel shame while doing “hehe” “haha” with disbelieving men.
Ali ibn Abu Talib censured some people by saying:
“Do you not feel any shame or protective jealousy? For I have heard that your womenfolk go out in the marketplaces and mix with the disbelievers”
[Shaykh Ahmad Shakir said: The chain is authentic in “Takhreej al Musnad no. 1118]13. Ali ibn Abu Talib on anal intercourse with one’s wife.
It is narrated by Ibn Abi Shayba
حدثنا ابن نمير عن الصلت بن بهرام عن عبد الرحمن بن مسعود عن أبي المعتمر أو أبي الجويرية قال : نادى علي على المنبر فقال : سلوني ، فقال رجل : أتؤتى النساء في أدبارهن ؟ فقال : سفلت سفل الله بك ، ألم تر أن الله تعالى يقول : أتأتون الفاحشة الآية .
Abu al-Mu’tamir sald: ‘”Ali called out from the minbar, saying: ‘Ask me.’ A man sad: ‘Can one have anal intercourse with women?’ He said: ‘You have sunk very low, may Allah bring you low. Have you not seen that Allah says: “Indeed, you commit such immorality as no one has preceded you with from among the worlds. [29:28].
[al Musannaf vol 3 kitab an-nikah]
I.e this prohibition is so obvious in Quran and sunnah and very famous among the people that even questioning about it was considered weird.
14. Ali’s opinion about the battle of Jaml.
Qais bin Abaad said:
قال علي رضي الله عنه لابنه الحسن يوم الجمل يا حسن ليت أباك مات من عشرين سنة قال فقال له الحسن: يا أبت قد كنت أنهاك عن هذا ،قال: يا بني لم أر الأمر يبلغ هذا
Ali may Allah be pleased with him said to his son Al-Hasan may Allah be pleased with him on the day of Al-Jamal, “O’ Hasan, I wish your father died twenty years ago.” Al-Hasan said, “O’ Father, I used to forbid you from this.” He said, “My son, I never thought it would become this bad.

Abi ad-Dhuha said:
قال سليمان بن صرد للحسن بن علي- رضي الله عنهما-“اعذرني عند أمير المؤمنين. فقال الحسن: لقد رأيته يوم الجمل-وفي رواية:يوم صفين- وهو يلوذ بي وهو يقول: ليتني مت قبل هذا بعشرين سنة”.
Suleman bin Sadr said to al Hasan bin Ali that, give my excuse to Ameer ul momineen (that i can’t participate), Hasan said: I saw my father on the day of Jaml -and in one narration in Siffeen- He said: I wish I could have died twenty years ago.
اتحاف الخيرة المهرة بزوائد المسانيد العشرة للبوصيري[ج8 ص6] وقال:رواته ثقات ومسند الحارث:ج2/ص761 ح757
15. When Ali heard the news of Uthman’s death.
Muhammad bin Hanafiya said:
” بلغ عليّاً أن عائشة تلعن قتلة عثمان في ” المربد ” ، قال : فرفع يديه حتى بلغ بهما وجهه فقال : وأنا ألعن قتلة عثمان ، لعنهم الله في السهل والجبل .
When Ali heard that Aisha cursed the killers of Uthman in “Mirbad” (a place near Basra). He (Ali) said by raising his hands until they reached on the level of his face: I also curse the killers of Uthman, May curse be upon them in the fields and mountains. [Fadail as-Sahaba 1/455, The Muhaqqiq said: The chain is authentic”]
16. Ali never wanted to fight with Talha and Zubair.
Ali said (when az-Zubair was killed in the battle of Jamal) :
والله ليدخلن قاتل ابن صفية النار ، إني سمعت رسول الله – صلى الله عليه وسلم – يقول : ” إن لكل نبي حواريا ، وحواري الزبير ” .
‘By Allah the Killer of Ibn Safiya ( al-Zubair ) will be in fire as I have heard the Prophet peace be upon him saying :’ Every prophet used to have a disciple and my disciple is Az-Zubair.
17. Actually Killers of Uthman started the war.
Ibn Hazam said:
وبرهان ذَلِك أَنهم اجْتَمعُوا وَلم يقتتلوا وَلَا تَحَارَبُوا فَلَمَّا كَانَ اللَّيْل عرف قتلة عُثْمَان إِلَّا أَن الاراغة وَالتَّدْبِير عَلَيْهِم فبينوا عَسْكَر طَلْحَة وَالزُّبَيْر وبذلوا السَّيْف فيهم فَدفع الْقَوْم عَن أنفسهم فِي دَعْوَى حَتَّى خالطوا عَسْكَر عَليّ فَدفع أَهله عَن أنفسهم وكل طَائِفَة تظن وَلَا شكّ أَن الْأُخْرَى بَدَأَ بهَا بِالْقِتَالِ وَاخْتَلَطَ الْأَمر اختلاطاً لم يقدر أحد على أَكثر من الدفاع عَن نَفسه والفسقة من قتلة عُثْمَان لَا يغترون من شن الْحَرْب وأضر أمه فكلتا الطَّائِفَتَيْنِ مُصِيبَة فِي غرضها ومقصدها مدافعة عَن نَفسهَا
The proof of that is they (the companions and tabiyeen) agreed on not to kill, neither did they fight. But at night the killers of Uthman knew that they will be the target now, as the agreement (of sahaba) is against them. They spent night in the army of Tahla and az-Zubayr and started (killing) by their swords. The army defended itself until the fight started with the army of Ali. They also defended their army and both of the parties thought rather believed that the fight has been started by the other group.., both of the parties defended themselves and the killers of Uthman didn’t want to loose the opportunity of war between the Muslims. [الفصل في الملل والأهواء والنحل 4/123]
Isn’t the case today? They want us to fight each other, they come to us in our get up and make us fight each other. The Sahaba were agreed on not to fight, but then killers of Uthman started the war.
18. Ali may Allah be pleased with him praised Aisha May Allah be pleased with her.
ad-Dhahabi narrated that Kulayb said:
انتهينا إلى علي رضي الله عنه ، فذكر عائشة ، فقال : خليلة رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم .
هذا حديث حسن . ومصعب فصالح لا بأس به . وهذا يقوله أمير المؤمنين في حق عائشة مع ما وقع بينهما ، فرضي الله عنهما
We reached Ali May Allah be pleased with him and mentioned Aisha, He peace be upon him said: She is (Khalilah) the beloved wife of the Messenger of Allah peace be upon him.
This narration is Hasan. Mus`ab is Saaleh there is no harm in him. This is what Ameer ul momineen (Ali) said in the haq of Aisha even after what happened between them. May Allah be pleased with them.

يرحم الله عليا ، إنه كان لا يرى شيئا يعجبه إلا قال : صدق الله ورسوله
May Allah have mercy on Ali, whenever he would like something He would say: “Allah and his Rasool have spoken the truth”
19. The brotherhood of Sahaba in Siffeen, only the khawarij wanted a fight and they succeeded.
When Muawiyah took control over the water, Ali sent Ash’ath ibn Qays to Muawiyah.
Imam ad-Dhahabi said:
أَبُو المُغِيْرَةِ الخَوْلاَنِيُّ: حَدَّثَنَا صَفْوَانُ بنُ عَمْرٍو؛ حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو الصَّلْتِ الحَضْرَمِيُّ، قَالَ:
حُلْنَا بَيْنَ أَهْلِ العِرَاقِ وَبَيْنَ المَاءِ؛ فَأَتَانَا فَارِسٌ، ثُمَّ حَسَرَ؛ فَإِذَا هُوَ الأَشْعَثُ بنُ قَيْسٍ، فَقَالَ:
اللهَ اللهَ يَا مُعَاوِيَةُ فِي أُمَّةِ مُحَمَّدٍ -صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ-! هَبُوْا أَنَّكُمْ قَتَلْتُم أَهْلَ العِرَاقِ، فَمَنْ لِلْبُعُوْثِ وَالذَّرَارِي؟ أَمْ هَبُوْا أَنَّا قَتَلْنَاكُم، فَمَنْ لِلْبُعُوْثِ وَالذَّرَارِي؟ إِنَّ اللهَ يَقُوْلُ: {وَإِنْ طَائِفَتَانِ مِنَ المُؤْمِنِيْنَ اقْتَتَلُوا، فَأَصْلِحُوا بَيْنَهُمَا} [الحُجُرَاتُ: 9] .
قَالَ مُعَاوِيَةُ: فَمَا تُرِيْدُ؟
قَالَ: خَلُّوا بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَ المَاءِ.
فَقَالَ لأَبِي الأَعْوَرِ: خَلِّ بَيْنَ إِخْوَانِنَا وَبَيْنَ المَاءِ
Abul Mughirah al Khawlani narrated from Safwan ibn Amr from Abul Sallat al Hadrami that
Ash’ath ibn Qays went to Mu’iwiyah and said: “Allah, Allah, O Mu’iwiyah, think of the Ummah of Muhammad (peace be upon him)! Suppose (If) you kill the people of Iraq (the Army of Ali). (Then) Who will guard the border and the women and children? Allah says: (And if two parties [or groups] among the believers fall to fighting, then make peace between both of them (Qur’an 49: 9) Mu’iwiyah said: “What do you want?’ They said: “Let us reach the water.” He said to Abul -A’war: “Let our brothers reach the water.”)
[Siyar A`lam an-Nubala 2/41, The Muhaqqiq said: “It is mentioned by al Mizzi in Tahdeeb al Kamal page 119, from Abdullah ibn Imam Ahmad from the book of “Siffeen” who narrates from his Father (Imam Ahmad), who narrated from Abul Mughirah”, It is narrated by Ibn Asakir in Tareekh Madeenah Damishq from his chain up to Imran ibn Bakar from Abul Mughirah al Khawlani 72/283]The Narrators.

Imam at-Tirmidhi said:
قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ . وَأَبُو الْمُغِيرَةِ هُوَ الْخَوْلاَنِيُّ الْحِمْصِيُّ وَاسْمُهُ عَبْدُ الْقُدُّوسِ بْنُ الْحَجَّاجِ .
This hadeeth is Hasan Saheeh, Abul Mughirah is al Khwlani.. his name is Abdul Quddus bin al Hajjaj,
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1545
Burqani said, I heard ad-Daraqutni: Abdul Quddus bin al Hajjaj, Abul Mughirah narrates from al Awzaai is trustworthy. [موسوعة أقوال أبي الحسن الدارقطني p 419]
3. Safwan ibn Amr
ad-Dhahabi said:
قال أحمد : ليس به بأس . وقال ابن المديني : كان عند يحيى القطان أرفع من عبد الرحمن بن يزيد بن جابر .
وقال أبو حاتم : سألت يحيى بن معين عنه ، فأثنى عليه خيرا . وقال الفلاس : ثبت في الحديث . وقال ابن سعد : كان ثقة ، مأمونا .
Ahmad said: There is no harm in him, Ibn al Madeeni said: He was better than Abdul Rahman bin Yazeed bin Jabir in the eyes of Yahya al Qattan.
Abu Hatim said: I asked Yahya ibn Maeen regarding him, and he praised him with good. al Fallaas said: He is accepted in hadeeth, Ibn Saad said: Utterly Trustworthy.

4. Abul Sallat al Hadrami
قال الذهبي في الكاشف قد سمع من أبي أمامة , وجبير بن نفير و عنه صفوان بن عمرو , و معاوية بن صالح , صدوق , قد ارسل عن خلق والثابت عنه انه سمع من هذين الصحابيين .
ad-Dhahabi said in al Kashif: He heard from Abu Umama, Jubayr ibn Nufayr. And Safwan ibn Amr, Muawiyah ibn Saaleh narrated from him, he is truthful.
Ibn Asakir said: He saw Siffeen. [Tareekh Damishq 72/283] The narrations of Waaqidi and Abu Mukhnif regarding Siffeen are fabrications.
20. The Sahaba wanted to solve the matter through talk rather than fight, but the khawarij came in and tried to start the fight.
Imam Ahmad narrated that
Amr bin al Aas said to Muawiyah:
أرسل إلى علي بمصحف وادعه إلى كتاب الله فإنه لن يأبى عليك
Send him (Ali) the Mushaf (Qur`an) and ask him towards the book of Allah (i.e. let us do settlement on Qur`an). He (Ali) would not deny this from you.
When a person went to Ali, Ali agreed by saying:
فقال علي نعم أنا أولى بذلك بيننا وبينكم كتاب الله
Yes (why not), I am the first to do so, The book of Allah is in between you and us.
The khawarij disliked it and said:
قال فجاءته الخوارج ونحن ندعوهم يومئذ القراء وسيوفهم على عواتقهم فقالوا يا أمير المؤمنين ما ننتظر بهؤلاء القوم الذين على التل ألا نمشي إليهم بسيوفنا حتى يحكم الله بيننا وبينهم
Khawrij came and we used to call them in those days “al Qur`a”, their swords were on their shoulders. They said: O Ameer ul momineen, we don’t want to wait for these people to come, rather we should go with our swords and Allah will decide between us and them?
Immediately Sahl ibn Hunayf censured the khawarij by saying:
فتكلم سهل بن حنيف فقال يا أيها الناس اتهموا أنفسكم فلقد رأيتنا يوم الحديبية يعني الصلح الذي كان بين رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وبين المشركين ولو نرى قتالا لقاتلنا
Sahl bin Hunayf stood up and said: O People, accuse yourself (rather than the decision of Ali), because we saw the treaty of Hudaybiya (i.e. a peace treaty) between the messenger of Allah peace be upon him and the mushrikeen. If we wanted to fight, we would fight that day (i.e. when we the peace treaty can be done with mushrikeen than these people are Muslim, why can’t it be done with them?) [Musnad Ahmad 3/475-476. It is mentioned in Ali al Murtada by Sayf ullah Khalid page 324: the chain is authentic]
In short,
Both of the parties had evidences, Ali ra was right, Muawiyah ra had his ijtihad, both never wanted a fight, , khawarij wanted the fight, both of them are in Jannah, May Allah be pleased with them.
21. The Debate of Ali and Ibn Abbas with khawarij, and the prayer of Aisha for Ali when she heard about the death of Ali ibn abu Talib.
Abdullah bin Shaddad said:
فدخل على عائشة – ونحن عندها مرجعه من العراق ليالي قتل علي – فقالت له : يا عبد الله بن شداد ، هل أنت صادقي عما أسألك عنه ؟ تحدثني عن هؤلاء القوم الذين قتلهم علي . قال : وما لي لا أصدقك . قالت : فحدثني عن قصتهم . قال : فإن عليا لما كاتب معاوية وحكم الحكمان ، خرج عليه ثمانية آلاف من قراء الناس فنزلوا بأرض يقال لها : حروراء . من جانب الكوفة ، وأنهم عتبوا عليه ، فقالوا : انسلخت من قميص ألبسكه الله ، واسم سماك به الله ، ثم انطلقت فحكمت في دين الله ولا حكم إلا لله . فلما أن بلغ عليا ما عتبوا عليه وفارقوه عليه ، فأمر فأذن مؤذن : أن لا يدخل على أمير المؤمنين إلا رجل قد حمل القرآن . فلما أن امتلأت الدار من قراء الناس ، دعا بمصحف إمام عظيم ، فوضعه بين يديه فجعل يصكه بيده ، ويقول : أيها المصحف ، حدث الناس ! فناداه الناس فقالوا : يا أمير المؤمنين ما تسأل عنه ! إنما هو مداد في ورق ، ونحن نتكلم بما روينا منه ، فماذا تريد ؟ قال : أصحابكم هؤلاء الذين خرجوا ، بيني وبينهم كتاب الله ، يقول الله تعالى في كتابه في امرأة ورجل : وإن خفتم شقاق بينهما فابعثوا حكما من أهله وحكما من أهلها إن يريدا إصلاحا يوفق الله بينهما [ النساء : 35 ] . فأمة محمد ، صلى الله عليه وسلم ، أعظم دما وحرمة من امرأة ورجل ، ونقموا علي أن كاتبت معاوية : كتب علي بن أبي طالب ، وقد جاءنا سهيل بن عمرو ونحن مع رسول الله ، صلى الله عليه وسلم ، بالحديبية حين صالح قومه قريشا ، فكتب رسول الله ، صلى الله عليه وسلم : بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم . فقال سهيل : لا أكتب بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم . فقال : ” كيف نكتب ؟ ” . فقال : اكتب باسمك اللهم . فقال رسول الله ، صلى الله عليه وسلم : ” فكتب : هذا ما صالح عليه محمد بن عبد الله قريشا . يقول الله تعالى في كتابه : لقد كان لكم في رسول الله أسوة حسنة لمن كان يرجو الله واليوم الآخر [ الأحزاب : 21 ] فبعث إليهم عبد الله بن عباس فخرجت معه ، حتى إذا توسطت عسكرهم قام ابن الكواء يخطب الناس فقال : يا حملة القرآن ، هذا عبد الله بن عباس فمن لم يكن يعرفه فأنا أعرفه ، هذا ممن يخاصم في كتاب الله بما لا يعرفه ، هذا ممن نزل فيه وفي قومه بل هم قوم خصمون [ الزخرف : 58 ] . فردوه إلى صاحبه ولا تواضعوه كتاب الله . فقال بعضهم : والله لنواضعنه ، فإن جاء بحق نعرفه لنتبعنه ، وإن جاء بباطل لنبكتنه بباطله . فواضعوا عبد الله الكتاب ثلاثة أيام ، فرجع منهم أربعة آلاف كلهم تائب ، فيهم ابن الكواء ، حتى أدخلهم على علي الكوفة ، فبعث علي إلى بقيتهم فقال : قد كان من أمرنا وأمر الناس ما قد رأيتم ، فقفوا حيث شئتم حتى تجتمع أمة محمد ، صلى الله عليه وسلم ، بيننا وبينكم أن لا تسفكوا دما حراما ، أو تقطعوا سبيلا ، أو تظلموا ذمة ، فإنكم إن فعلتم فقد نبذنا إليكم الحرب على سواء : إن الله لا يحب الخائنين [ الأنفال : 58 ] . فقالت له عائشة : يا ابن شداد فقتلهم ؟ فقال : والله ما بعث إليهم حتى قطعوا السبيل ، وسفكوا الدماء ، واستحلوا أهل الذمة . فقالت : آلله ؟ قال : آلله الذي لا إله إلا هو لقد كان ذلك . قالت : فما شيء بلغني عن أهل العراق يقولون : ذو الثدي وذو الثدية ؟ قال : قد رأيته ، وقمت مع علي عليه في القتلى ، فدعا الناس فقال : أتعرفون هذا ، فما أكثر من جاء يقول : قد رأيته في مسجد بني فلان يصلي ويقرأ ، ورأيته في مسجد بني فلان يصلي . ولم يأتوا فيه بثبت يعرف إلا ذلك . قالت : فما قول علي حين قام عليه كما يزعم أهل العراق ؟ قال : سمعته يقول : صدق الله ورسوله . قالت : هل سمعت منه أنه قال غير ذلك ؟ قال : اللهم لا . قالت : أجل ، صدق الله ورسوله ، يرحم الله عليا ، إنه كان لا يرى شيئا يعجبه إلا قال : صدق الله ورسوله . فيذهب أهل العراق يكذبون عليه ويزيدون عليه في الحديث
I went to visit Aisha, we were with her, she came back from Iraq in those days when Ali was martyred. She said: O Abdullah bin Shaddad, Would you tell me the truth about what I am going to ask you? Tell me about the people who were killed by Ali? I said: Why Wouldn’t I tell you the truth? She said, then let me know about them. I said:
When Ali accepted from Muawiya that there will be two arbitrators from both sides, then 8,000 Qur`a (Khawarij) rebelled against Ali and they went to “Harura” on the way of Kufa. They rejected this agreement (of two arbitrators), and said: He (Ali) took off the shirt (of Caliphate) which Allah gave to him. And He has left this name (i.e. Ameer ul Momineen) which Allah has given to him. He accepted the “Men” as Hakam in the religion of Allah, even though “There is no Command but that of Allah”.
(ANSWERS OF ALI TO KHAWARIJ)
When Ali came to know about their objections and rebellion, He ordered to announce that only the one who knows Quran (among them) should come to me (for the discussion). When the house became full from Qur`a, Ali asked for a great Mushaf (Qur`an). He tapped the Mushaf and said: O Mushaf talk to the people. People said, O Ameer ul momineen: This is only paper and ink, why are you asking it? We will tell you whatever we learnt from it, what do you want to do?
(REPLY TO THEIR FIRST ARGUMENT THAT: “There is no Hakam but that of Allah”)
Ali replied: Those of your companions rebelled, Quran is in between me and them. Allah says: regarding Man and woman: “And if you fear dissension between the two, send an arbitrator (Hakam) from his people and an arbitrator from her people.” [an-Nisa verse 35], Listen, the Hurmah of the Ummah of Muhammad peace be upon him is more than the hurmah of (a single) man and woman. (so when Hakam can be accepted on husband and wife than why can’t for us and them)
(REPLY TO THEIR SECOND ARGUMENT: “Why you left the word Ameer ul momineen while sending the letters of peace treaty with Muawiya)
They object that I have only mentioned Ali ibn Abu Talib (i.e. left the word Ameer ul momineen) while doing peace with Muawiya. Verily, the prophet of Allah contracted an agreement with Quraysh (Mushrikīn) on the Day of Hudaybiyyah, Suhayl ibn Amr came and we (Ali and the companions) were also with him (the Prophet peace be upon him). The Prophet peace be upon him said to me: “Write, oh ‘Alī: “In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful”. Suhayl said, do not write this. I (Ali) asked: what should I write? He said, write: باسمك اللهم, The messenger of Allah peace be upon him said: write this (what suhayl mentioned), and said: “write Muhammad, the messenger of Allah”. Suhayl said: ‘If we knew you to be the messenger of Allah, we would not go against you”. Then He said: “Write This is what Muhammad Ibn ‘Abd Allah agrees upon with the Quraysh”. and Allah says “There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent pattern for anyone whose hope is in Allah and the Last Day ” [al Ahzab, 21]. (So, I have followed the prophet peace be upon him by not writing Ameer ul momineen)
(THE DEBATE OF IBN ABBAS WITH THE KHAWARIJ FOR THREE DAYS, DUE TO WHICH 4000 OF THEM ACCEPTED THE TRUTH)
Then Ali sent Ibn Abbas to them, I (Abdullah bin Shaddad) was with him, when we reached there, Ibn al Kwa (from the khawarij) said: O you who have Quran, He is Ibn Abbas. If you don’t know him then let me inform you that I Know him through Quran. He is the one from Quraysh and Allah says regarding them: “Nay! But they are a quarrelsome people.” [al-Zukhruf, 58]. Send him back to his companion (Ali) and Do not debate with him. Their (the khawarij) speakers stood up and said: By Allah we will surely talk to him regarding Quran, if he came with the truth which we know, we will surely agree with the truth. If he came with falsehood then we will be harsh with him due to his lies and will send him back to his companion (Ali).
Then for three days Ibn Abbas did debate with them regarding Quran, due to which 4000 of them accepted the truth and came back with Ibn Abbas.
(ALI’S MESSAGE TO THE REST OF THEM)
Ali sent a message to the rest of them, You have seen our dealing (i.e. his and muawiya’s peace treaty). You can live whereever you want until the ummah of Muhammad gather together. You can live anywhere on this earth, We will save you from our spears until you block our way and spread bloodshed. If you will do this then we will make a war with you, “Indeed, Allah does not like traitors” [al Anfal, 58]
(ALI DID NOT KILL THE KHAWARIJ UNTIL THEY STARTED KILLING AND OUTSTRETCHED ARMS TO PEOPLE OF DHIMMA)
Aisha asked: Is it true that Ali killed them? Ibn Shaddad said: By Allah Ali did not send anyone to them until they block the ways and spread bloodshed, They killed Ibn Khubab and outstretched arms to the people of dhimma. Aisha said: By Allah? I said: Allah is the one who has no partners, this is exactly what happened.
Aisha said: What is that thing which the people of Iraq say “The man of female breast, the man of female breast”? I said: I saw him, I was standing with Ali near his dead body in their (khawarij’s) died men. He (Ali) asked the people, do you know this man?, Many of the people said: We have seen him praying in the mosque of banu fulan. There was no other way of his identity other than this. Aisha asked, What did Ali say on him as the people of Iraq think?. I said, I heard Ali saying: Allah and his rasool have spoken the truth. (i.e. the Prophet peace be upon him already informed us regarding this man).
(AISHA’S PRAYER FOR ALI)
Aisha said: Have you seen him (Ali) saying other than this? I said: By Allah, no. She said: Yes Allah and his Rasool have spoken the truth, May Allah have mercy on Ali, whenever he would like something He would say: “Allah and his Rasool have spoken the truth”
[Ibn Kathir said: “The chain is authentic” in Al Bidaya wal Nihaya vol 10/566-568, Musnad Ahmad 2/86 Shuyab al Arnaoot said: “The chain is Hasan”, Shaykh Mustafa al Adwi declared the narration “Hasan” in كتاب الصحيح المسند من أحاديث الفتن والملاحم وأشراط الساعة. page 151]22. Killing other than killers in retaliation.
Abdullah ibn Sab’a said:
قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ عَلِيًّا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ , عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ : ” وَمَا يَنْتَظِرُ أَشْقَاهَا عَهِدَ إِلَيَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ , لَتُخَضَّبَنَّ هَذِهِ مِنْ هَذَا ” وَأَشَارَ ابْنُ دَاوُدَ إِلَى لِحْيَتِهِ وَرَأْسِهِ , فَقَالُوا : يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ أَخْبَرَنَا مَنْ هُوَ حَتَّى نَبْتَدِرُهُ , فَقَالَ : ” أَنْشَدَ اللَّهُ رَجُلا قُتِلَ بِي غَيْرَ قَاتِلِي , قَالُوا : أَلا تَسْتَخْلِفُ ؟ قَالَ ابْنُ دَاوُدَ : وَسَقَطَ عَلَيَّ مَا بَعْدَ هَذَا .
“I heard ‘Ali May Allah be pleased with him say on the minbar: ‘We are only waiting for a wretched man. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) promised me that this (his beard) would be contaminated with the blood of this (his head).’ They said: ‘Tell us who your killer is, so that we may go and annihilate his family.’ He said: ‘I urge you by Allah not to kill anyone for my killing except the one who kills me.’

23. Profound words from Ali ibn Abu Talib after he was stabbed.
Imam ash-Shafiee narrated:
أخبرنا إبراهيم بن محمد عن جعفر بن محمد عن أبيه أن عليا رضي الله تعالى عنه قال في ابن ملجم بعد ما ضربه أطعموه واسقوه وأحسنوا إساره إن عشت فأنا ولي دمي أعفو إن شئت وإن شئت استقدت وإن مت فقتلتموه فلا تمثلوا .
“Ali said regarding Ibn Muljim when he was stabbed by him, Feed him and give him water and treat him well. If I recover,
then I am in charge of the matter and I will forgive him if I want, or if I want, I will settle the score, If I die, then kill him
(as he killed me) and do not mutilate him”
24. Meaning of a Saheeh hadith and A False aqeeda taken feom it regarding Ali ibn Abu Talib.
In the end i want to answer regarding a misconception regarding Ali ibn abu Talib. I heard a sufi molvi saying, Ali is our helper (maula) as Allah is our helper (maula.) And mentioned the hadith:
“For whomever I am his Mawla then ‘Ali is his Mawla.”
If mawla in the above hadith means helper as Allah is our helper then, at the time of Uhud where Ali ra was present, Prophet peace be upon him was present.
And when Abu Sufyan ra said, “We have (the idol) Al-`Uzza, whereas you have no `Uzza!” The Prophet (peace be upon him) said (to his companions), “Reply to him.”… “Say:
اللَّهُ مَوْلاَنَا وَلاَ مَوْلَى لَكُمْ
Allah is our Helper and you have no helper.” [Sahih al-Bukhari 4043, 4044]
The Prophet (peace be upon him) did not say I am the helper (Mawla) and Ali is our helper (Mawla), rather He said “Allah is our Helper”
So, whats the meaning of Mawla in the first hadith?
a) Imam al Nahw wal Lughah wal Adab wal Insab Muhammad bin Ziaad Ibn al Araabi Abu Abdullah al-Haashmi (150 h to 231 h) said
ولكنه من باب المحبة والطاعة ويدل على أن المولى والولي المحب
In this hadith the meaning of Mawla is Love and friend [Tareekh Ibn Asaakir 42/238 the chain is hasan as mentioned in Majalla as-Sunnah no. 37 page 29]
b) Mulla Ali Qari mentioned
لا غير فيجب أن يحمل على المحبة وولاء الإسلام ونحوهما .
so the word mawla must be interpreted as referring to love, the bonds of Islam and so on.[Mirqaat al Mafateeh no. 6091]
c) Allama at-Teebi said
لا غير فيجب أن يحمل على المحبة وولاء الإسلام ونحوهما
so the word mawla must be interpreted as referring to love, the bonds of Islam and so on. [Tuhfat al-Ahwadhi Sharh al-Tirmidhi, no 3713]
In short,
When it comes to asking help, The Prophet peace be upon him used Mawla for Allah and no one else.
25. Ali Ibn Abi Talib May Allah be pleased with him in a Nutshell.
Ibn Hajr said :
” عليُّ بن أبي طالب بن عبد المطلب بن هاشم الهاشمي، حَيْدَرَة، أبو تُراب، وأبو الحَسنَيْن، ابنُ عمِّ رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وزوجُ ابنته، من السابقين الأوَّلين، ورجَّح جمعٌ أنَّه أوَّلُ مَن أَسلَم، فهو سابقُ العرب، وهو أحدُ العشرة، مات في رمضان سنة أربعين، وهو يومئذٍ أفضلُ الأحياء مِن بَنِي آدَم بالأرض، بإجماع أهل السُّنَّة، وله ثلاثٌ وستون سنة على الأرجح
The cousin of Prophet peace be upon him, Husband of Sayyidah Fatimah May Allah be pleased with her, Father of Hasnayn (Hasan and Hussain) May Allah be please with them, Haider, Abu Turaab, Sayyiduna Ali bin Abu Talib bin Abdul Muttalib bin Hashim May Allah be please with him.
He was among the earliest Muslims and according to a group he was the first who accepted Islam. He is Sabiq ul Arab, And among the ten people who were given the glad tidings of Paradise (in a single hadith). He died in Ramadan 40 h at the age of 63 years. When he died he was the best among all the men and women of this world. There is a consensus of Ahlus sunnah upon this creed. [Taqreeb at Tahdeeb Ibn Hajr]
