Shaykh al Islam Ibn Taymiyah said:
والواجب على المسلم إذا سئل عن ذلك أن يقول: لا أنا شكيلي ولا قرفندي؛ بل أنا مسلم متبع لكتاب الله وسنة رسوله.
وقد روينا عن معاوية بن أبي سفيان: أنه سأل عبد الله بن عباس رضي الله عنهما فقال: أنت على ملة علي أو ملة عثمان؟ فقال: لست على ملة علي ولا على ملة عثمان بل أنا على ملة رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وكذلك كان كل من السلف يقولون: كل هذه الأهواء في النار: ويقول أحدهم: ما أبالي أي النعمتين أعظم؟ على أن هداني الله للإسلام أو أن جنبني هذه الأهواء، والله تعالى قد سمانا في القرآن: المسلمين المؤمنين عباد الله فلا نعدل عن الأسماء التي سمانا الله بها إلى أسماء أحدثها قوم – وسموها هم وآباؤهم – ما أنزل الله بها من سلطان.
بل الأسماء التي قد يسوغ التسمي بها مثل انتساب الناس إلى إمام كالحنفي والمالكي والشافعي والحنبلي أو إلى شيخ كالقادري والعدوي ونحوهم أو مثل الانتساب إلى القبائل: كالقيسي واليماني وإلى الأمصار كالشامي والعراقي والمصري.
فلا يجوز لأحد أن يمتحن الناس بها ولا يوالي بهذه الأسماء ولا يعادي عليها بل أكرم الخلق عند الله أتقاهم من أي طائفة كان.
Whenever it is asked from a Muslim what are you? It is obligation (Wajib) on him to say that neither I am Shakeeli , neither Qarfandi, I am a Muslim who follows Quran and sunnah. When Muawiyah bin abi Sufiyan (radhi Allahanho) asked Ibn Abbas (RadhiAllahanho) whether you are on the way of Ali (Radhi Allahanho) or Uthman (radhiAllahanho) , He answered that I am neither Alwi nor Uthmani. Rather I am on the way of Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), and thats how all the righteous predecessors used to say.
Allah named us Muslim, Momin, Ibadillah in Quran. We will not change the name given to us by Allah by the name which was innovated by people. And they call themselves and there forefathers by those names to which Allah didn’t reveal an evidence.
Rather, the names that are used, such as those attributed to an Imam, such as Hanafi Maliki, Shafi’i , Hanbali, or Qadri, Adavi, or to tribes, such as Qaisi, Yemeni, or Syrian, Iraqi, Egyptian,
It is not allowed for anyone to test them due to these attributations neither he should love or hate these names, Rather, in the sight of Allah, every person who adopts piety is honorable, no matter what group he belongs to

he said:
وكيف يجوز التفريق بين الأمة بأسماء مبتدعة لا أصل لها في كتاب الله ولا سنة رسوله؟!

Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
ولا عيب على من أظهر مذهب السلف وانتسب إليه واعتزى إليه ، بل يجب قبول ذلك منه بالاتفاق ؛ فإن مذهب السلف لا يكون إلا حقاً ، فإن كان موافقاً له باطناً وظاهراً : فهو بمنزلة المؤمن الذي هو على الحق باطناً وظاهراً ، وإن كان موافقاً له في الظاهر فقط دون الباطن : فهو بمنزلة المنافق ، فتقبل منه علانيته وتوكل سريرته إلى الله ، فإنا لم نؤمر أن ننقب عن قلوب الناس ولا نشق بطونهم
There is no shame in declaring oneself to be a follower of the salaf, belonging to it and feeling proud of it; rather that must be accepted from him, according to scholarly consensus. The madhhab of the salaf cannot be anything but true. If a person adheres to it inwardly and outwardly, then he is like the believer who is following truth inwardly and outwardly. If he adheres to it outwardly only, and not inwardly, then he is like the hypocrite; he is to be accepted as he appears to be, and what is hidden in his heart is left to Allah (to judge), because we are not instructed to check on what is in people’s hearts.
