Ibn Jawzi counsels men on the importance of marital faithfulness.
He said:
فالسعيد من إذا حصلت له امرأة.. فمال إليها، ومالت إليه، وعلم سترها ودينها: أن يعقد الخنصر على صحبتها.
وأكثر أسباب دوام محبتها أن لا يطلق بصره، فمتى أطلق، أو أطمع نفسه في غيرها، فإن الطمع في الجديد ينغص الخلق، وينقص المخالطة، ويستر عيوب الخارج، فتميل النفس إلى المشاهد الغريب، ويتكدر العيش مع الحاضر القريب
“Blessed is the man who, upon acquiring a wife.., leans towards her with affection, and she towards him, and he understands her modesty and her faith: that he should find contentment in (seal the bond of) companionship with her.
The best way to keep her love is to not look at other women. If he does, or desires someone else, it will ruin their relationship. Wanting something new can:
– Change his nature
– Reduce their closeness
– Hide the flaws of the other woman
This will make him attracted to someone else and unhappy with his current wife.”
